The islands of Tonga are truly a boater's paradise-170 islands scattered across tropical waters within a large, protective coral reef. As Desolation Sound Yacht Charters' Lois Stevenson is keen to point out, "the cruising area in the Vava'u group of islands is like a sheltered, island-studded lake in the middle of the South Pacific. The sailing conditions are excellent, with predictable trade winds and sheltered seas." Volcanic in origin, the islands of Tonga also offer some of the most incredible snorkeling anywhere, a colourful realm of fish, corals and caves. "You have to try Mariners Cave," says Lois Stevenson. A short snorkel underwater, "like swimming under your keel," puts you into a misty, blue-lit cavern.
Tonga is also a cultural experience. "Tonga has been off the beaten path for centuries," says Louis Stevenson, "and has escaped many of the problems of the 'civilized' world. The people have retained their ancient heritage, language, dance and music." The Stevensons promise that our flotilla groups will be invited to dance with the locals, visit villages and participate in traditional feasts.
